The book
A true story
I grow up in a house where it isn't safe. A stepmother who dominates every room and gets physical, a father who stays silent and hits, a table where eating and being afraid go hand in hand. I learn to listen for footsteps in the hallway. I learn that knocking doesn't help. And I learn to run, night after night, looking for a door that actually opens.
Black Eye is my true story, and that of the people who eventually took me in. Honest, raw, and without making it prettier than it was. For anyone who recognizes something like this, and for anyone who works with children and wants to understand what it feels like from the inside.
I am ten years old and I climb out of the window. Not to die. To live.

About me
Why I wrote this book
I'm Danny Markus, born and raised in Veghel, the Netherlands. I grew up in a difficult foster and step-family situation, and later built a life with work and an active family.
With this book, my debut, I want young people in similar circumstances to know they're not alone, and I want the people who work with them to feel what it's like from the inside.
Alongside the book, I share my story at schools, youth care organizations, and conferences.
